Check out these tips from industry professionals to help you stay productive while you’re forced to work from home. After all, your career can’t come to a standstill.
Over the past few weeks, thousands of professionals have had to switch to working from home because of the quarantine. But this is forced remote work, which calls for a lot of adjustments to a new work routine, as well as learning to handle home life. Many people end up working a triple shift: professional duties, family, and household chores all at once. In the end, everyone is trying to find their own way to juggle it all and stay productive.
At first, we came across an endless stream of articles with all sorts of tips for working from home, like this one from Fast Company. Following the trend, universities around the world, along with education and learning platforms, began offering hundreds of free online courses so students and professionals can sharpen their skills during the lockdown. Take advantage and check out this list from ShowMeTech that brings together 1,156 free courses in Portuguese with certificates.
On the other hand, many people have lost their jobs and are looking to get back into a job market that is going through an unprecedented crisis. Other professionals are dealing with canceled projects and postponed events, and are looking for alternatives to keep the consequences from being so drastic.
According to a survey by Cielo, from March 1 to April 6, total retail in Brazil fell 24.7%. Durable Goods is one of the hardest-hit categories, with apparel down 50.1%. In the Services category, Tourism and Transportation dropped 63.4%, and Restaurants and Bars fell 43.4% over the period.

Planning
This moment calls for planning, or rather, re-planning for 2020, so you’re ready when the quarantine ends. The more strategic your services are, the less drastic things will be later on. That’s the advice of Josie Moraes, a digital strategist and winner of the ABRADI award for digital professional in the planning category (2019). She says what matters now is listening to your clients and to what the market has to say, so you can propose ideas and solutions.
“What’s the best thing I offer the world, and how can I help?” is the kind of mindset we should adopt, as Josie suggests. It’s time to observe the landscape and learn, while taking great care not to fall into opportunism. Now is not the time to give up, because stopping everything makes us unproductive. The best way forward is to reinvent yourself, look to the near future, and see yourself as a professional working to improve the Market. Continuing to deliver increasingly innovative projects and proposals backed by strategic planning, and betting (even more) on technology as your main resource, are ways to set yourself apart, reach your goals, and stand out.
Productivity
Suddenly, everything changed. It feels like we’re inside a snowball that grows bigger every day, and we don’t know when it will stop. Yes, everyone is going through a lot of changes and adjustments without knowing exactly what they’re doing. But the first step is to stay calm. The new is scary and can leave us feeling lost, as Douglas Suzano Barbosa, who works in Human Resources, points out.
We are witnessing a reinvention of the way we work: everything is more dynamic, and the way companies communicate internally and deal with their employees is changing. For Douglas, this shift isn’t limited to the pandemic; this transformation will stay with us into the future. His advice to professionals: stay calm, give it time, and in the meantime, stay optimistic.
Sharing the same view, Cláudia Carnovali, a Human Resources professional focused on Recruitment, Selection and Organizational Development, believes that the quarantine is teaching us a new way of living. New technologies and tools are emerging and bringing new changes to companies, which will come to realize that people are capable of working from home. “The corporate world still has a lot of changing to do, and that change will bring more innovation and creativity, because at the same time, productivity is being looked at closely. Some people are enjoying working from home more than at the office,” says Cláudia. She adds, “with every change, we need to see the positive side, and the new way of working will certainly be innovative and challenging.”
In the tech sector, Cláudia has noticed an increase in job openings and hires due to growing demand for projects. Right now, the entire selection and hiring process is done online. As a result, candidates are evaluated against broader criteria, such as: organization while working from home, discipline, delivery, professional demeanor, autonomy and control.
For those looking for tips on staying organized while working from home, the best approach, according to Douglas, is to find ways to feel useful and productive for yourself. Start by organizing your routine: wake up at the right time, keep healthy habits and write your “to-do list” for the day. If you don’t get organized, you’ll get distracted and feel unproductive and useless, with the sense that you didn’t get anything done all day, he explains. “Revisit old work, like a spreadsheet that needs updating, and redo it, improving key points,” says Douglas.
On the other hand, companies are also doing their part, for instance by implementing programs to stay close to employees. Strengthening internal marketing is essential and has been helping, such as by sending out tips on working from home, mental health, and so on. Cláudia says that HR departments at some organizations are calling employees as part of a listening and counseling process. For example, helping them keep a routine; not staying in pajamas all day; paying attention to mood changes; noticing whether or not they feel like working that day. It’s a way of fostering the integration and unity that organizations are seeking with remote work. “The human side needs to be just as relevant as the push for results and productivity,” she says.
Another tip Douglas shares for feeling useful is to ask coworkers if they need help and make yourself available. Someone might be overloaded and in need of support. He emphasizes, “keep seeking knowledge and stay up to date in your field. That also helps with productivity, and you will certainly reap the rewards down the road.”
