With each passing decade, people spend more on services and less on products. That’s what the U.S. government’s Current Expenditure Survey shows, as reported in this article from <\/span>The New York Times. <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

Let’s look at our own reality: today, almost anything we think about consuming no longer requires us to spend money buying an object or durable or non-durable goods. For example: <\/span><\/p>\n

Uber: car as a service <\/span><\/p>\n

Ifood: food delivery as a service<\/span><\/p>\n

Netflix: show as a service <\/span><\/p>\n

Spotify: music as a service <\/span><\/p>\n

Streaming platform subscriptions deliver entertainment as a service and are paid monthly. Ifood and other food delivery apps are paid for the product plus the delivery service. With Uber, you pay based on the mileage of the ride taken with a driver, who provided the service. Even though they span <\/span>different areas of the market<\/b>, they all work the same way: payment for the service. This segment has been growing in recent years, and today we’re seeing an explosion of offerings and business model opportunities. <\/span><\/p>\n

Main types of “as a Service”<\/b><\/h4>\n

SaaS<\/b> – <\/span>Software as a Service<\/b> is a platform built to deliver a specific type of service, with no need to install any program on your machines. It’s used entirely online, and you pay a monthly or annual subscription to access the service, with plans ranging from basic to more complete options with additional features. <\/span><\/p>\n

Examples: <\/span><\/p>\n

Dropbox – cloud storage<\/span><\/p>\n

Monday – management system<\/span><\/p>\n

Slack – management system <\/span><\/p>\n

SaaS applications are also known as web-based software, on-demand software, and hosted software. The term “software as a service” is considered part of cloud computing nomenclature, along with infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), desktop as a service (DaaS), managed software as a service (MSaaS), mobile backend as a service (MBaaS), data center as a service (DCaaS), and information technology management as a service (ITMaaS).<\/span><\/p>\n

The SaaS market is very promising and will further drive growth across all software sectors in the coming years. A recent study by <\/span>Gartner<\/span><\/a> found that 46% of organizations named IT services and vendor consolidation among their top three most effective cost optimization approaches.<\/span><\/p>\n

IaaS<\/b> – <\/span>Infrastructure as a Service<\/b> refers to online services that provide high-level APIs used to abstract away various low-level details of the underlying network infrastructure, such as physical computing resources, location, data partitioning, scaling, security, backup, and so on. IaaS cloud providers supply these resources on demand from their large pools of equipment installed in data centers. For wide-area connectivity, customers can use the Internet or carrier clouds (dedicated virtual private networks).<\/span><\/p>\n

PaaS<\/b> – <\/span>Platform as a Service<\/b> or <\/span>application platform as a service<\/b> (<\/span>aPaaS<\/b>) is a category of cloud computing services that provides a platform allowing customers to develop, run, and manage applications without the complexity of building and maintaining the infrastructure typically associated with developing and launching an app. <\/span><\/p>\n

There are several types of PaaS, including public, private, and hybrid. PaaS was originally intended for applications on public cloud services, before expanding to include private and hybrid options.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amazon Web Service<\/span><\/p>\n

GaaS – Game as a Service, <\/b>also known as “living games” or “live games,” which rely on continuous updates. The gaming industry introduced the idea of games as a service by offering game subscription models, which ensure recurring revenue. Apple recently launched Arcade, an unlimited game subscription plan with access across all iOS devices. Google also launched its own subscription gaming model, Stadia, which provides instant, unlimited access to a collection of games without the need for updates, downloads, or installations. <\/span><\/p>\n

EaaS – Experience as a Service<\/b> means delivering <\/span>experience as a service: turning the product into experiences for the customer by adding value to a service.
